This colorful, carefully handcrafted little bas-relief depicts a dolphin swimming in the sea, and it is inspired by the spectacular mosaic pavement in the Cathedral of Aquileia, in Northern Italy. One of the most beautiful scenes represented in this mosaic, the oldest and largest in Western Christianity, is that of the Fishing Cupids, in which many angels catch fish from the blue sea. The Dolphin modeled by Ithaca is one of the many sea creatures depicted on this ancient, astonishing mosaic. Aquileia, Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, IV century A.D.
