Ares, God of War, Painted Bas-Relief

Wonderfully handcrafted sculpture in terracotta, richly painted with engobes following the ancient techniques.

Ares was the god of war and of meaningless destruction.
In Ilias, V, 31 –34, with these appropriate words, Athena addresses him:
.... blue-eyed Athena spoke words to violent Ares, taking his hand: “Ares, deadly Ares, you ferocious, blood-thirsty destroyer of walls…"

Reproduction in bas-relief of a statue of Mars, god of the war, sculpted for the Villa Adriana at Tivoli, a copy of a lost masterpiece in the “severe style” (first half of the fifth century b. C.).

Given its firing at about  1000° C, the sculpture can be placed outside and won't be damaged by sun, cold or ice.
