The Cathrine urn, with its splendid carnations arranged in the shape of a cross, reminds us of a medieval legend, according to which this flower was born from the tears of Mary as she accompanied her Son’s Passion.
A symbol of purity, but also of love and gratitude, in ancient Greece the carnation—or Dianthus ("the flower of the gods")—was sacred to Zeus and was often used in important religious ceremonies.
For its vividness and beauty, it has thus been chosen by the artists of Ithaca to accompany the beloved person to their final resting place—without ever withering.
